Characters in Look Back in Anger

Tags: Notes & Analysis

Jimmy Porter: Jimmy Porter, the protagonist in Look Back in Anger is the 'angry young men' and the hero fo the play. He is a tall, thin, about twenty-five. He is a man disturbing mixture of sincerity and malice, of tenderness and cruelty. He is a man who, by his pride, alienates both those who are sensitive those who are insensitive. He is a pipe -smoker, good eater, social rebel but not a fatter man. He is interested, too, in listening to a musical concert on the radio, playing in a trumpet. He is a university graduate. He had tried his hand at various occupations before starting a sweet -stall from which he is now earning his livelihood .He is the spokesman for the younger post -war generation. One principal reason for his anger seems to be the disparity between his own working -class origin and the upper middle class to which his wife belongs. He is feeling frustrated and bitter because the society has not treated him properly and because society is callous.
Alison Porter:  Alison Porter is Jimmy`s wife. She comes from Britain`s upper class, but married into Jimmy`s working class lifestyle. The audience learns in the first act that she is pregnant with Jimmy`s child. Jimmy`s destructive anger causes her great strain and she eventually leaves him. Her child miscarries and she comes back to Jimmy to show him that she has undergone great suffering.
Helena Charles: Helena Charles is Alison`s best friend. She lives with them in their apartment while visiting for work.  Helena is from an upper class family. She is responsible for getting Alison to leave. She can be considered the play`s moral compass.
Colonel Redfern: Colonel Redfern is Alison`s father. He represents Britain great Edwardian past. He was a military leader in India for many years before returning with his family to England. He is critical of Jimmy and Alison`s relationship, but accepts that he is to blame for many of their problems because of his madding in their affairs.
